Finding A Grown Up Guitar For Small Adult Hands by Jim DeSantis

When I played guitar in the 50's and 60's, I was limited by having small hands. There were certain tunes I could just not stretch to play. In those days a guitarist had to spend a couple thousand dollars for a custom made git with a short neck or resign themselves to a limited song list. That's not the case today!

Back in the day we had a pretty successful local band. We played all the "sock hops" and even made a nice living playing road gigs in the tri-state area of Ohio, New York, and Pennsylvania under the names of "The Crazy Tones" and "The Challets". I mainly played rythym guitar and, on occasion, I played keyboard on certain songs. One thing I never played and never learned was lead guitar, the ultimate goal for all guitar players I think.

Well, I retired recently and decided to revisit my love of guitar playing. I began a search for a guitar that offered a nice price and good quality. I bid on a few on eBay but quickly found the bids to be almost as high as buying locally when you consider Shipping and Handling. I scoured local music stores but found nothing that fit me comfortably, that was at a fair price. I had no idea how much guitar prices have gone up over the years and how much quality has suffered for a low end guitar. Even good used guitars were few and far between. But, I kept looking.

In the process I discovered two manufacturers of short neck guitars. I thought - "These must be for kids and girls." But, once I looked over the specifications I realized they were not the guitars sold by toy stores at all. These were versions of full size guitars that are downsized for small adults with small hands and, yes, even for the aspiring lady pickers and teens.

My number one concern, of course, was quality of craftsmanship and sound quality. The price was a surprise. More about that in a moment.

I looked at the Fender Squire and the Ibanez Mikro. The Fender, frankly, got poor ratings from musicians and from newbies. The Ibanez, on the other hands, scored a 90% satisfactory rating among the same group. Based on that, I bought the Ibanez Mikro for under $130.00 including Free Shipping and Handling. I have not been disappointed.

I now play tunes that were almost impossible and I play them comfortably. The quality? The sound? I give this git a 100% positive rating!

Beginner Acoustic Guitar – Tips & Lessons for Better Guitar Playing

I am sure you have been searching for acoustic beginner online guitar lessons for quite some time now. Perhaps these sites have not answered some of the most basic questions that a beginner has when starting acoustic guitar. This article was written to address those questions with tips, lessons and basics that I hope will help you on your way.

What is the best beginner acoustic guitar?

This is probably the most common question amongst beginner acoustic guitar players. Do not buy the most expensive guitar, but do not buy the cheapest you can find either. A good range to shop in would be between 100 - 300 dollars.

If you can, find an experienced guitar player to come shopping with you. Ask him or her to pick up and play all the guitars within your price range and then purchase the one that feels and sounds the best. Make certain to examine any guitar you plan on purchasing.

Look down the neck of the guitar to see if it is warped. Check the action on the guitar. The action refers to the height of the strings from the fret board. If the action is too high or too low, it can cause problems with your playing.

Remember that you are just a beginner and this is your first guitar. Do not invest a lot of money into buying a guitar at this stage. If you do, and you find that acoustic guitar playing is not your thing, then you will have a beautiful guitar collecting dust in the corner of your room. If you enjoy playing and you find yourself getting better, then you can begin to explore your options and purchase a higher quality guitar.

Do not let yourself get stressed out when buying your first guitar. Just get a descent one and start practicing.

Some good brands to consider: Epiphone, Takamine, Yamaha and Squier.

Ouch! My fingers hurt. I can't play!

This is a very common complaint amongst the beginner. Every single guitarist has experienced hand and finger pain when just starting out. It is something that you simply cannot avoid. The remedy? Keep playing and build up strength in your hands and fingers and develop those calluses! Building calluses on your fingertips will allow you to hold down the strings of the guitar without any pain while flattening your fingertips to produce a better sounding note.

You build up calluses and strength from practicing. Practice, practice and more practice. In time the pain will subside, but you have to get through this difficult stage of playing first, so hang in there. Listen to your body though. If you are in serious pain then by all means give your hands and fingers a rest.

Here is a great exercise to help strengthen your hands and fingers and to build up calluses:

This exercise will also familiarize you with the entire neck of your guitar and give you the agility to play chords and solos. Building the muscles in your hands will improve your stamina for playing and will develop what is called "muscle memory".

The object of this exercise is to play each note going up and down the neck of the guitar. Start with your pointer finger on the 6th string 1st fret, let your fingers follow up the neck of the guitar, one note at a time, staying on the 6th string until your pinky finger reaches the fourth fret.

Play the 1st fret with your pointer finger

Play the 2nd fret with your middle finger

Play the 3rd fret with your ring finger

Play the 4th fret with your pinky finger

Note: After you have played the first fret do not lift your pointer finger up. Keep each finger on the string as you play them. This is important as it will aid in the strengthening process.

Repeat the same process on the 5th string, then the 4th, and so on. When you get to the bottom string, slide your entire hand over one fret without lifting your fingers.

So at this point, your pinky finger should be on the 1st string 5th fret, your ring finger on the 4th fret, middle finger on the 3rd fret and your pointer finger on the 2nd fret. Now play in reverse, starting with your pinky, going back up the guitar to the 6th string, only this time you have to lift up your fingers as you play.

Then simply repeat the process until you reach the last fret of your guitar. Do not rush this exercise or you will develop poor playing habits. Go nice and slow making sure you are producing a nice tone with each note you play.

More Beginner Guitar Tips

Make sure to stretch your fingers and hands before practicing.

Learn to actually read music and not just tablature.

Hire a guitar teacher if you can afford it. A teacher will be able to catch any mistakes you are making and correct you on the spot. This will help you develop better playing habits. If you cannot afford a guitar teacher, then invest in a good home study course.

Learn how to play chords, scales and techniques and not just your favorite songs. I know you just want to jump right in and learn "Stairway to Heaven", but if you do not put the time in to learn the theory behind those great songs, you will not improve as a guitar player.

Do not pack up your guitar. Leave it out in the open. This will make it more convenient for you to just pick up your guitar and play at any time. Practice everyday for at least 20 minutes, more if possible. If you find yourself getting bored, or making too many mistakes, then take a break and do something else. 20 minutes of quality practice is better than an hour of sloppy practice.

Listen to other guitarists and not just in your favorite genre of music. You will be surprised at how other styles of music can influence your playing. Play with other musicians as often as possible. This is a great way to learn and pick up new techniques and advice.

Learn the proper way to string and tune your guitar.

Learn the proper way to take care of and maintain your instrument.

I hope this article has helped. The best tip I can give you is to never give up. Keep playing every day and try not to get discouraged. Good guitar playing is not just about technique, it also comes from your heart. If you truly love playing guitar, and you are dedicated to getting better, then it is only a matter of time. 2010 Investing Was Year of the Tiger Well Really the Scaredy Cat by Paul Sutherland

What was great about 2010 is that it was not 2009. According to the Chinese calendar, 2010 was the year of the tiger. Statistically, at least in my book, 2010 should be titled The Year of the Scaredy-Cat. No great tiger in the stats, unless you look at how many people behaved as if they had grabbed a tigerâs tail and were fearful to let go. At the peak of this year $17 went into fixed and money market funds for every $1 that went into stock funds. There were few signs that people were being released by the seductress âirrational fearâ that led them to the silliness of earning a guaranteed near 1% on money markets and negative returns after inflation.

Upon hearing our wealth management advice FIM Group's clients, however, were not seduced by the scaredy-cats. Rather, as long-term investors, they held firm that life will go on and took advantage of the big opportunities created by all the fear. Thankfully, most sellers of stock had already sold, so there was little for those scaredy-cats to do except buy once they realized that the tiger was a friendly sort and just wanted to be respected.

2011âs Worry List

We will stand firmly in the future and give forecasts in our next newsletter, but for now I need to explain a few things that would keep me awake at night if our portfolios were not structured to benefit from an unfolding of the malaise.

Municipal Bonds: There are 90,000 local governments in the U.S., and these utility districts, cities, schools, counties and states account for 15% of our workforce. The main sources of income for local governments are sales tax and property tax. Property values have dropped (and continue to drop) and so has consumer spending, thus affecting taxes. At the same time, governments are feeling the need to provide more services for unemployment, health care and social services. President Obama gave billions to help support state and local governments, which really only delayed the inevitable, namely layoffs, pension reform and fewer services. Will there be backlash? Will states and municipalities just say âNoâ to paying the interest on their (municipal) bonds, renegotiate their terms or just not pay them off at maturity? Pay the police and fire departments or pay the interest on bonds will be a decision that many weaker local governments will have to make. Most state and local governments canât âlegallyâ run defici
ts, so lawyers from coast to coast will be creating a new expense for municipalities as they try to ascertain their legal options. Cutting pensions, reducing salaries (and taking on the unions), declaring bankruptcy, shuttering health and welfare programs, shutting down prisons, outsourcing police and fire, and consolidating schools are some of the tough decisions that might come before defaulting on an interest payment on their municipal bonds.

FIM Groupâs Investment Policy Response: For now, FIM Groupâs portfolios will be light on municipal bonds; we will be sticking only to the highest-rated. Many municipalities will do fine through this newer, slower economy, but most will be faced with some tough choices. Also owning AAA high-quality sovereign bonds in stable, pragmatic and wellmanaged countries is a rational response to U.S. dollar weakness.

U.S. Political Leadership: We are spending more than we take in no matter whose budget you look at. As we approach April, we expect a lot of fear talk and posturing by Tea Party, Democrats and Republicans alike, as our elected officials need to âmake sure the government doesnât close down by voting to raise the debt ceiling.â

FIM Groupâs Investment Policy Response: No big deal â markets that respond with weakness to our normal political âgoofinessâ will create a buying continued from page 1 opportunity. It should also be good for creating more U.S. dollar weakness opportunities. As Samuel Taylor Coleridge said, âIn politics, what begins in fear usually ends in folly.â

North Korea (War): Will the problems in that hemisphere balloon into a major conflict that requires our mighty militaryâs involvement?

FIM Groupâs Investment Policy Response: As this situation unfolds, the effect on the U.S. dollar should be neutral as it could make it a âsafeâ place for a while. The more the U.S. becomes involved, the larger the negative impact will be on our currency. Korea should be a non-market event. China will run the show â and be key to how the conflict is handled. Politically, South Korea is our ally, and we are politically tied to their defense.

The Drunk Brothers Euro: Greece gets 110 billion â' to help keep its economy afloat; then Ireland, one of the (former) tigers of Europe, gets 85 billion â' for liquidity purposes. And letâs remember Spain and Portugal that are messing with the euroâs stability. 2011 will be more of this mad attempt by the European community to hold it together.

The euro is 11 years old, and it is going to be an ongoing pain in the fiscal, monetary and economic rear, especially for France and Germany. There is little incentive for weaker countries to do more than say they will âbe goodâ and be fiscally conservative and economically responsible. This will cause significant volatility, but a good business holds its value regardless of its location or its âdomicileâ currency. So this euro noise will create headlines, but really itâs just noise that creates buying opportunities. FIM Group will avoid euro bonds and euro fixed investments. Bottom line: what is bad for the euro is good for other currencies. The volatility will create opportunities.

Worry lists create opportunity, and they are as normal as can be. The chart on the next page shows the cycle of market emotions. Perhaps it should be called the âWay of Worry.â I have rarely been as optimistic about the right environment for outstanding investment results as I see when I look forward to our new decade. Many investments are at near historic bargain prices. Investors still are reluctant to even nibble away at good, quality, well-managed, solid investments in income stocks, and other equity investments, and there are trillions of dollars sitting in money markets earning near â0â â all one needs to do is look to this chart to know we are closer to a trough of great opportunity than a peak.
